Lecturers cannot teach without a PhD from 2021

A PhD qualification will be mandatory for teaching positions in universities in India from July 2021 as part of a new University Grants Commission bid to “attract and retain the best quality teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges”, India’s Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced last week, reports The Economic Times.

The Human Resource Development Ministry has approved the new regulations. As per the regulations, special provision has been made for direct recruitment of assistant professors in universities and colleges for PhD degree holders from a university or institution in the top 500 global rankings.

Research clusters will be created in the universities within the state for sharing research facilities, skills and infrastructure to ensure optimal utilisation of resources and creating synergies among higher education institutions.
