25% funding rise for universities and research centres
The government of Luxembourg announced it would spend €1.44 billion (US$1.77 billion) on research and higher education between 2018 and 2021. Spending on research and higher education thus grew by €284 million, corresponding to an increase of 25% over the period from 2014 to 2017, reports Delano.On 11 January, Marc Hansen, minister delegate for higher education and research, presented the contract with the University of Luxembourg and several multiannual framework agreements with research centres and the funding body Fonds National de la Recherche.
A total of €766.8 million will be allocated to the University of Luxembourg and €383 million to three public research centres. In addition, €265.4 million will be allocated to programmes and instruments of the National Research Fund. A bonus of €20.5 million will reward the performance of institutions in the European Union's framework programme for research and development.
