Government approves creation of quality assurance agency

The Ministry of Higher Education and Research has taken a step towards promoting educational quality, with approval this month by the Council of Ministers of the creation of the Malian Agency of Higher Education and Scientific Research Quality Assurance.

The quality of higher education is central to the development of an African education area to promote African integration through harmonisation of qualifications and academic mobility, reported Lejecom.

This process was strongly supported by UNESCO, the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education, or CAMES, and the West African Economic and Monetary Union, or UEMOA, all of which had passed strong resolutions on the issue and recommended that independent national quality assurance agencies should be set up to evaluate courses and higher education and research institutions, said Lejecom.

Lejecom said that quality assurance agencies would establish, with the public authorities or the institutions themselves, a frame of reference for each kind of course, institution, programme and structure, and set out required standards, a procedural guide, calendar and the period of validity for an evaluation.
