Student protests close national university
Honduran riot police arrested at least 12 students on 1 July, out of hundreds who occupied the buildings of the National Autonomous University of Honduras to protest against the privatisation of universities across the country, reports Telesur.Administrators at the national public university have cancelled the third academic term in over a dozen departments in response to the protests at two main campuses that have lasted nearly a month, a move that the Honduran student movement – which has struggled against what it sees as the privatisation of public education – has slammed as “arbitrary”.
Student protests started to heat up at the beginning of June on campuses of the National Autonomous University of Honduras, in the capital city of Tegucigalpa and the second largest city of San Pedro Sula. The movement has criticised the neo-liberalisation of the university, demanding new student representation in decision-making structures and more transparency about how the institution is spending money on educational services.
