Counting the cost of #FeesMustFall protests
The nationwide Fees Must Fall protests resulted in over R300 million (US$20 million) in damages, the Department of Higher Education and Training has said in reply to a written question from the opposition Democratic Alliance, writes Thulani Gqirana for News24.Earlier this month protesters started a fire in a University of Witwatersrand lecture hall. This was just the latest in a string of incidents at universities across the country that have seen university property damaged.
In the reply, Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande said 14 universities had submitted damage reports and that the universities had so far not confirmed "from which university budgets these damages will be recovered. However, certain damages will be paid or recovered from insurance claims.”
