Multimillion rand grant scheme for black universities

South Africa's historically black universities will get government help to finally make their “backlog of underdevelopment” disappear, writes Bongani Nkosi for the Mail & Guardian.

Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande revealed the grant at the University of Johannesburg last week, where he met representatives of student organisations, higher education groups and unions aligned to the ANC.

“A new Historically Disadvantaged Institutions Development Grant of R410 million [US$36 million] per annum has been introduced from 2015-16 to 2020-21, totalling R2.5 billion over five years. [This] will assist in developing the historically disadvantaged universities,” Nzimande said.
