University denies political interference in dean’s removal

Professor Datuk Dr Mohammad Redzuan Othman's tenure was not extended after a transparent election process, University of Malaya has said in a statement. Last week the university denied allegations that its dean of the faculty of arts and social sciences was removed due to political interference, reports The Malaysian Insider.

"Contrary to news reports, the decision not to extend Redzuan's tenure was based on a democratic and transparent election process which was carried out in accordance with the University of Malaya Constitution 2010,” the institution said in the statement.

There has been a lot of criticism directed at the university and the education ministry after allegations that the government pressured Redzuan into resigning as director of the university’s Centre for Democracy and Elections. The government was allegedly unhappy with Redzuan's work, which appeared to favour Pakatan Rakyat over Barisan Nasional.
