Pistorius trial sparks surge in law degree applicants

South African universities have seen a surge in applications to study law which they are attributing in part to the national obsession with the Oscar Pistorius trial, writes Aislinn Laing for The Telegraph.

The long-running and high profile trial of the country’s most famous athlete for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp resumed recently after an extended break while he underwent a court-ordered 30-day psychiatric evaluation. The trial has been screened live on a dedicated cable television channel, on which the evidence and tactics of both sides is dissected by a panel of legal experts and journalists at the end of each day.

Barry Roux, Pistorius’ barrister, and his opposite number Gerrie Nel, the state prosecutor, have become household names and are both regularly stopped in the street by people wanting to snap ‘selfies’ with them, which they then post on social media.
