President calls for political tolerance in universities

“Universities should be free for making statements and criticising…These are the places where people should think globally and act nationally." Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani made the remarks, reported by Iranian state IRINN TV, while addressing heads of Iranian universities in Tehran, report Umid Niayesh and Saeed Isayev for Trend.

The president slammed academics who treated students according to their political preferences. "A university is not a centre for parties or political wings," Rouhani said. "Tolerance and moderate atmosphere should be dominating in universities." He added that proper research was not possible without a free environment, adding that that environment in universities should be safe, not security-based.
