Investment in universities could buy a visa

Visas will be auctioned off to overseas millionaires or offered in exchange for investment in hospitals and universities, under new government proposals, writes Claire Carter for The Telegraph.

The plans come amid concerns that the existing process for investor visas is not working to the UK’s economic advantage. There are fears that access to these visas works more like a loan and offers a cheap way for wealthy Russian and Chinese to stay permanently in the country.

The proposals will be outlined in a report by the government’s immigration advisers, which will say that foreigners will be able to bid for a proportion of investor visas, which will allow them to apply to remain here indefinitely. Another option is to offer foreigners visas in return for them endowing good causes such as hospitals, universities and college, The Times reported.
