RWANDA

Weekend courses find eager students
Since its opening three years ago in Kigali, Mt Kenya University (MKU) has offered weekend programmes that are winning the hearts of learners in pursuit of higher education. Weekend study programmes are not a new concept in Kenya where the university originates, but in Rwanda MKU enjoys a monopoly, writes Anne Anjao for The Independent. The system offers students lessons entirely over the weekend, starting on Saturday morning and ending on Sunday evening. The students still cover the required contact hours, just like their day and evening counterparts, in a given semester.
The programme is very popular in the school of health sciences, which has close to 300 students taking weekend classes at the Kicukiro branch of the university. "The weekend programmes have taken Rwanda by storm because they offer the convenience of studying without necessarily taking a study leave for those who are working," said Onesmus Marete, head of the school of health sciences.
