Students protest for separation of education and politics

Sana’a University students staged a demonstration on Wednesday demanding that studies resume separate from the political conflict inundating the university and Yemen. Students also continued to refuse the presence of military personnel on campus, writes Ashraf Al-Muraqab for Yemen Times.

Student protestor Mohammed Al-Hawsaly said students were continually the victims of political conflict at the university. The new demonstration coincided with media reports that Dr Majdi Aqlan had refused Prime Minister Mohammed Basindawa’s decree appointing him acting rector of the university. Reports suggested that Basindawa appointed Dr Abdulhakeem Al-Sharjabi after Aqlan turned down the post.

Dr Abdulla Al-Azazi, head of the university’s Teaching Staff Syndicate, told Yemen Times that the syndicate would soon meet with President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi to discuss the situation at Sana’a University, adding that teachers support amending the university law to hold elections.
