Donations to universities under threat

Scottish universities have warned that changes outlined in last week's budget for wealthy charitable donors could undermine fundraising, writes Andrew Denholm for The Herald.

The warning follows Chancellor George Osborne's announcement that tax relief on charitable donations would be limited to £50,000 (US$79,500), or 25% of the total value, whichever is the greater amount. On Wednesday, The Herald revealed Scottish charities, including the National Galleries of Scotland, feared the measure would damage fundraising.

Now, universities have warned the move could also badly impact on the education sector.

Chloe Kippen, head of major gifts at Edinburgh University, said: “If implemented, the proposed plans to cap tax relief on donations from high earners could seriously impede our ability to raise funds for important projects at the university.”
