SWAZILAND: University re-opens, for some

The University of Swaziland last week registered students for the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year, after a three-week delay caused by lack of funding. But some first-year students were told to wait until they had received confirmation from government that they would be sponsored, writes Winile Masinga for the Swazi Observer.

Registrar Sipho Vilakati confirmed that a majority of the unregistered students were still awaiting their letters of scholarship from government before they could be registered. Many students who were not registered said they had been accepted for the humanities programme.

The university was supposed to open on 8 August, but the opening had to be postponed due to financial problems. The government paid E25 million (US$2.86 million) for the university to open last week. This is part of the E80 million required by the institution.

The delay in the opening of the national university resulted in students hitting the streets, another article in the Swazi Observer reported. It said first year students had not been registered, and that the academic calendar would be adjusted to accommodate the teaching weeks lost.
