CZECH REPUBLIC: Huge growth in private students

The number of students at private colleges and universities in the Czech Republic has increased almost 30-fold in the past 10 years, the Czech Statistical Office and the Institute of Education Information said in remarks picked up by the Czech news agency CTK.

In 2000 some 2,000 students attended these institutions, a mere 1% of higher education students, while last year their number was more than 57,000, some 14% of students. Last year, there were 28 state and public colleges and universities and 44 private ones.

The Education Ministry has pointed out for long that this number is too high and that it will no longer support the establishment of new private schools. Czechs study primarily economics, humanities and the hotel business at private colleges and universities.
