TUNISIA: Euro-Mediterranean plans engineering institute

Civil engineering laboratories based in the Euro-Mediterranean countries are planning to set up a joint institute of engineering in 2010, said Hédi Hsisse, director of the civil engineering laboratory of the National Engineering School of Tunis (ENIT), reports the Tunis-based La Presse.

Hsisse, who was speaking at an international conference in Tunis on "Advances in geo-materials and structures", said the aim was to introduce joint Euro-Mediterranean masters and PhD degrees.

The conference, held every two years, gives engineering bodies an opportunity to build up scientific cooperation between the laboratories in the region through the Euro-Mediterranean Network of Civil Engineering Laboratories.

Participants, who came from North Africa, the US, Europe, Canada and Iran, presented new advances in the field of non-renewable natural resources, construction costs and the reduction of natural risks due to landslides.
