NEW ZEALAND: Phishing hits South Island universities
South Island universities have been targeted in a "spear phish" campaign aimed at stealing staff and student login details, reports Stuff.co.nz. In the past month Otago, Lincoln and Canterbury universities have all had problems with phishing campaigns targeting email addresses."Spear phish" emails appear to come from university information technology support teams asking people to reconfirm login details and passwords. People who fall for the scam can have their accounts accessed and attackers often use the victim's email account to send out more phishing messages. Some Otago University users had fallen victim to identity loss. In one case a senior postgraduate student's username and password were published on a web page. Visitors to the page could access online library resources available via the university.
