IRAN: Students detained during protests
Iran detained up to 24 students after a spate of university demonstrations in Tehran, a judiciary spokesman has confirmed, reports AFP. His confirmation came after hundreds of people demonstrated at Tehran University in a major protest calling for the release of jailed students and criticising President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad."Between 20 and 24 students are in jail. They have been arrested over recent months, notably for seeking to disturb the public order," judiciary spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters. Students have faced intense pressure from Iran’s hard-line government, but since October have staged occasional protests over educational shortages, the firings of liberal teachers and dentition of activists.
