PHOTO A report attempting to assess the impact of COVID-19 on universities in Latin America shows that the speed and nature of the emergency response varied significantly between universities, but even for those with prior experience of online provision, the transition involved huge effort.
PHOTO The agenda for higher education internationalisation in the Middle East and North Africa or MENA is lagging behind other regions. Some 4.5% of all students in the region were internationally mobile in 2019, but most of that mobility was one way – outward bound – the World Higher Education Conference 2022 was told.
As African universities pursue enhanced graduate employability, job creation and knowledge transfer for sustainable development, they must be entrepreneurial in teaching, increase entrepreneurial orientation within study programmes and support start-up companies – along with innovative initiatives to promote cooperation with the business sector.

PHOTO The UNESCO World Higher Education Conference 2022 opened this week in Barcelona in Spain, reaffirming the importance of higher education as a public good and a human right, and underlining the need to promote local and global equity of university access.
PHOTO The UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning and the United Nations Refugee Agency have developed 15 evidence-based recommendations for facilitating refugee access to host countries’ universities. The measures are outlined in a policy paper launched at the UNESCO World Higher Education Conference.
The sharing of scientific data has the potential to make science a commodity for international cooperation among countries and institutions, with the capacity to solve global problems for everyone’s benefit – but governance and regulation of access as well as repositories remain a challenge.
Cooperation between universities in the Global South is growing, according to delegates gathered at the third UNESCO World Higher Education Conference – WHEC2022 – and many believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has served to accelerate this trend.
