The International Council for Open and Distance Education, or ICDE, is holding its world conference in the mega-resort Sun City near Johannesburg from 14-16 October, hosted by the University of South Africa. University World News is the media partner. This is the sixth of a series of articles that engage with global ideas and developments in open and distance learning, around the conference theme of “Growing Capacities for Sustainable Distance e-Learning Provision”.
More than 1,200 participants descended on the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London, across the road from the UK’s Houses of Parliament, on 1-2 June for the British Council’s Going Global conference, described by the hosts as the world’s largest gathering of international education leaders concerned with the future of tertiary education. For five decades the International Association of University Presidents, or IAUP, has served as the voice of global higher education, promoting peace, mutual understanding and respect through academic diplomacy and fostering the vitality and reach of higher education institutions through energetic international partnerships. In Oxford last week nearly 150 university leaders and other participants from 37 countries gathered for its 50th Anniversary Conference to celebrate IAUP’s achievements and consider the challenges facing higher education and the wider world in the next 50 years. A new book, Knowledge Production and Contradictory Functions in African Higher Education, will be launched at the African Higher Education Summit being held in Senegal's capital Dakar next week. It is the latest publication of HERANA – the Higher Education Research and Advocacy Network in Africa – which for the past seven years has been investigating higher education in eight African countries. This special report highlights key findings arising from the research, which is led by the Centre for Higher Education Transformation and funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
