Apology to Wits University for incorrect reference

Dear Editor

I note the article published today (07/09/2023) “Ruling party leader stops academic’s lecture on Zimbabwe elections” on your website by Kudzai Mashininga.

The information contained in the first paragraph is incorrect and not factual. The OR Tambo School of Leadership is an ANC leadership school and has nothing to do with the University of the Witwatersrand or the Wits School of Governance. Please remove any reference to Wits University from your article and posts immediately and issue an apology.

Wits University nor the Wits School of Governance had no such lecture planned, cancelled or postponed. The university jealously safeguards its institutional autonomy and academic freedom, and values freedom of speech and freedom of expression as guaranteed in the South African Constitution. The university is not dictated to by any party, especially not the ruling political party or government.

Dr Ibbo Mandaza is a visiting professor in the Wits School of Governance, a totally separate entity from the OR Tambo School of Leadership. Please confirm receipt of this email and correct immediately.
