Chinese students make up over half of overseas enrolments

Chinese international students now account for more than half of New South Wales universities’ overseas enrolments, with thousands more beginning courses last year despite most remaining offshore and learning online, writes Daniella White for The Sydney Morning Herald.

The number of Chinese enrolments rose by 2,259 in 2021, bucking the trend of an 8.6% decrease in international students across the state.

An auditor-general’s report, tabled in the New South Wales parliament on Monday 27 June, warned that the pandemic had increased universities’ reliance on the Chinese market, which posed a “concentration risk” for the sector.
