COVID: HE body orders colleges to reduce student numbers

The Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has ordered private tertiary institutions of learning that do not have adequate facilities to reduce the number of students so as to maintain social distancing in line with COVID-19 guidelines, reports Daily Monitor.

Arthur Babu Muguzi, the NCHE director of finance, planning and administration, said many private institutions rushed to re-open to all students instead of only finalists, yet they don’t have enough facilities and capacity to meet standard operating procedures. This, he said, has put lives of students and staff at risk of contracting COVID-19.

This comes after a recent Daily Monitor survey revealed that several private schools countrywide have ignored the reporting dates set by the Ministry of Education and allowed all learners to resume normal classes. Government had asked the schools to re-open in a staggered manner in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
