Lecturers at government universities go on strike
Academic staff at all public universities in Uganda have laid down tools demanding payment of their salary enhancement arrears by government that they say date back to 2015, writes Damali Mukhaye for the Daily Monitor. This comes two days after some universities, including Makerere and Kyambogo, started online teaching for their final-year and continuing students following the closure of institutions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a recent interview, the chairperson of the Forum for Academic Staff Association in Public Universities (FAPSU), Deus Kamunyu, said the staff had agreed to lay down tools, effective from 6 February, adding that the strike had started across all public universities.
