Minister outlaws ragging in universities

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Higher Education Bandula Gunawardena stressed that ragging (initiation rituals) cannot take place on university campuses for whatever reason from this year, reports ColomboPage.

Addressing a media briefing on 11 January, the minister said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s policy manifesto states that ragging in Sri Lankan universities and other higher education institutions will be eliminated from this year for all the students of this country to get a free education without fear.

The minister noted that about 2,000 students had given up university education due to ragging and said the government has informed the University Grants Commission to work out a programme to provide justice for the aggrieved students.
