Californian public universities to offer medication abortion
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill on 11 October requiring medication abortion services at public state universities starting in 2023, writes Caroline Kelly for CNN.“As other states and the federal government go backward, restricting reproductive freedom, in California we are moving forward, expanding access and reaffirming a woman's right [to] choose,” Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement. “We’re removing barriers to reproductive health – increasing access on college campuses and using technology to modernise how patients interact with providers.”
The bill joins a slew of others passed by Democratic-leaning states looking to strengthen or expand abortion access as Republican-leaning states, emboldened by the conservative-majority Supreme Court and efforts by the federal government limiting abortion, push measures to restrict it.
