Calls to scrap graduation fees at Scottish universities
Some, including the University of Strathclyde, the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian University, have already dropped the fees and it is hoped that others will do the same.
The motion, brought forward by SNP students and members of the Scottish parliament (MSPs) from Holyrood's Education Committee, stated that compulsory fees for graduation runs contrary to the principle of free higher education in Scotland. SNP MSP Rona Mackay said that students in the country should not be constrained by their personal finances. “A student’s graduation is one of the most important days of their life as they rightly celebrate years of hard work – this shouldn’t come at a cost.”
