Students free to join political campaigns outside campus
The higher education minister has said students from institutions of higher education are free to join political campaigns taking place outside their campuses during the 14th general elections in Malaysia, reports The Star.“They have the right to engage in politics outside campus. Within the campus, they are subject to university regulations,” said Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh. Idris added that if students broke university regulations by campaigning on campus, it would be up to the universities to decide on what action to take.
Speaking to reporters after the launch of Taylor’s Curriculum Framework on 27 March, Idris said that the Universities and University Colleges Act had been amended in 2012 to allow students to engage in associations, bodies or groups, including political parties, while off campus.
