Ex-PM Mapon opens eponymous high-tech university

Former prime minister Augustin Matata Ponyo Mapon has inaugurated a new university specialising in advanced engineering and named after him, in his home town of Kindu.

The ultra-modern, 12,000 square metre University Mapon has capacity for 3,500 students, reported Le Potentiel of Kinshasa.

Thanks to Mapon’s influence, the university will specialise in high-technology engineering options such as electronics, computerisation, geology and mining, specialisations found elsewhere in the country only in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, said Le Potentiel.

The university was entirely financed by a partnership of sponsors from local mining and banking businesses, and international construction and commercial companies, including the foundations Rachel Forrest, Banro, Kibali Gold, Rawji de Rawbank and Sofibanque, reported Le Potentiel.
