New institute of health inaugurated in Sumbe

A new institute of health with capacity to train nearly 2,000 students in nursing and laboratory work has been inaugurated in Sumbe.

A Chinese construction company, Reduns International, built the institute in three years on a budget of 150 million kwanzas (about US$904,000), reported Angop, the Angolan Press Agency of Luanda.

Eusebio de Brito Teixeira, governor of the West-Central province of Cuanza Sul where Sumbe is the chief town, inaugurated the institute which contains 12 classrooms and six laboratories, and can cater for 1,848 students.

Teixeira said it would help make up for the lack of health personnel in the province, and that boarding facilities would be provided to make it easier for students from other towns in the province.

Director of the institute, Crisóstomo Firmino, said the inauguration opened the way to introduce courses, in specialisms such as pharmaceuticals, stomatology, nutrition and radiology, reported Angop.
