Central universities told to host 'patriotic' rock shows
In a recent circular sent to all the central universities and Indian Institutes of Technology across the country, the human resource development ministry has asked them to host rock shows. However, there is a twist – the shows will have a patriotic theme, writes Riya Sharma for TNN.As part of the 'Ye India Ka Time Hai' programme, the government will identify certain bands which will be performing at different universities across the country. The programme is being organised to celebrate 70 years of India's independence and 75 years of the Quit India Movement. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi will organise a rock band performance on 5 September along with a brainstorming session as part of the programme.
However, this method to instil patriotism hasn't gone down too well with most students, who say that patriotism needs to come from within, not through any event. They also argue that rock music is, by definition, rebellious. On the other hand, there are also some who think that this novel idea might click with the students.
