Students protest over switch from study grants to loans
Two students were arrested in protests against government measures to change study grants into loansThe students were demonstrating following a government decree signed by President Pierre Nkurunziza transforming their grants into loans, reported Radio France International. But a police representative gave “incitement to violence” as the reason for detaining the students.
Students from the University of Burundi, in Bujumbura, demanded withdrawal of the government order, or they would call a strike. They also demanded to know where the two students were being held, and condemned arbitrary arrests, said RFI.
One of the students told RFI: “We are threatened and arrested from time to time. We want to know why we are being arrested, and what offence we have committed.”
