Academics criticise ‘maximum government’ moves

The University Grants Commission has found a toehold in the process for reappointing principals of colleges affiliated to central universities, prompting cries of "maximum government" from academics, writes Basant Kumar Mohanty for the Telegraph India.

On 29 November, the 40-odd central universities were told that no college principal could be reappointed for a second term without an "external review" by a panel that includes the regulator's nominee(s) apart from the university's. Earlier, the University Grants Commission had no say in the process.

"This [the new rule] will allow direct government interference in the reappointment of principals. This is unreasonable," said Nandita Narain, president of the Federation of Central Universities Teachers Associations.
