Thousands of students march against education changes

Thousands of students marched in Peru’s capital Lima last week in defence of quality education. They took to the streets as congress decides on the future of the country’s reforming education minister, writes Dan Collyns for CCTV America.

Peru’s popular Education Minister Jaime Saavedra faces a no-confidence motion in the opposition-dominated Congress. Supporters of former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori accuse him of a specific case of corruption.

But analysts said the political opposition wants to overturn Saavedra’s so-called ‘university law’, which seeks to supervise higher education. As the political opposition threatens to impeach the education minister, potentially jeopardising higher education reforms, students are taking to streets to tell the politicians not to mess with their future.
