Bill for university protest damage soars

Since October of last year to the middle of April this year damage to universities’ property has amounted to more than R450 million (US$30 million), reports Denise Williams for The Citizen.

This was revealed by Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande in a written reply to a parliamentary question posed by Democratic Alliance MP Belinda Bozzoli. “The estimated costs of damage to properties have increased by R151.532 million, totalling R459.835 million since October 2015,” Nzimande said.

The costs of damages related to, among others, the #FeesMustFall protest, which was ignited months before. However, the monetary calculation for vandalism and arson in some cases was only measured from October.
