Government initiative to increase number of lecturers

Higher Education Minister Adão do Nascimento has announced the introduction of a training and retraining initiative to increase the number of higher education lecturers in Angola. He also said his ministry would continue to control university fees, to avoid increased charges.

Nascimento was visiting the École Supérieure Polytechnique de Moxico in Luena, the main town in the eastern province of Moxico, reported Agência Angola Press or Angop.

He said the training and retraining plan had been introduced at the beginning of the year, with the aim of increasing the number of teachers in higher education institutions who could train qualified personnel to boost Angola’s development.

“I recognise there is a lack of human resources in nearly all the units that make up the country, and not just Moxico. Our budget is reduced with the drop in the price of oil on the international market. But we are working to find a solution to problems and ensure good quality of services,” said Nascimento.

During the visit he also told journalists his ministry was controlling university fees, and that higher education institutions would continue to set fees at the previous rate.

“Managers of higher education institutions have already been directed on this question, and the ministry will supervise schools so as to avoid fee increases in higher education,” Angop quoted him as saying.
