Stellenbosch University retains Afrikaans language
Afrikaans and English will enjoy equal status as medium of instruction at the University of Stellenbosch, after AfriForum Youth and the university came to an agreement in the High Court in Cape Town recently, reports eNCA.The decision was initially approved during the university’s council meeting late last year and confirmed in the court.
The university's management had proposed that English replace Afrikaans as the primary language of teaching. It followed calls from students and lobby groups for the institution to transform because most lectures are in Afrikaans.
