Universities to create Chinese-language academic index
Several universities in Taiwan and China signed an agreement last week, with the aim of establishing a system to index Chinese-language academic journals, write Stanley Cheung and Kay Liu for CNA.The agreement was initiated by National Taiwan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University and Nanjing University and was signed during a meeting in Hong Kong on the issue. A total of 32 universities in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau signed the agreement.
"Currently, most authoritative citation databases index English journals. Non-English publications often do not enjoy the recognition and attention that they deserve," Chinese University of Hong Kong Vice-chancellor and President Joseph Sung said. Several other participants at the meeting said articles about Chinese culture that are not written in Chinese cannot offer a precise presentation of the content.
