Sharp rise in student applications

The number of students accepted by Welsh universities last year increased by almost 6%, figures published recently have shown, writes Gareth Evans for Wales Online.

Statistics released by the Welsh government show there were 25,511 students accepted to full-time degree and higher national diploma courses in Wales in September 2013. The figure represented a 5.7% rise on 2012 entry and an increase of 37.7% compared with 2000. The majority - 52.4% - were women.

Closer analysis showed a sharp 9.4% rise in the number of English students being accepted by Welsh universities. Overall, there were 10,475 students accepted from across the border last year, although students hailing from Scotland and Northern Ireland were also up.
