Provincial education roadmap given final shape

A vice-chancellors' committee set up by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given final shape to a roadmap for higher education in Punjab province in Pakistan over the next 10 years, reports The News.

The announcement was made at a briefing on the future of higher education, presided over by Punjab Minister for Education Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan. Besides establishing a world-class Information Technology and Technical University at Knowledge Park in Lahore, upgrading existing sub-campuses of public universities, granting university status to some major government colleges and improving infrastructure of existing universities, development projects worth Rs34.6 billion (US$356 million) would be completed over the next five years. A further Rs30 billion would be spent on infrastructure development.

Rana Mashhood said Knowledge Park Lahore would serve as a catalyst in this process, and separate academic areas of 12 to 20 hectares of land had been reserved for 10 international universities there.
