Less than 1% of students opt for research-oriented courses

Less than 1% of students pursuing higher education in India opt for research-oriented courses, parliament was informed last Monday, reports Press Trust of India.

"Out of the total enrolments in higher education, the percentage of students enrolling in the field of research is about 0.79%," Minister of Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor told Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question.

The minister informed the house that the government had taken various measures to promote and grow postgraduate-level studies and research. "The steps include continuous increase in successive plan allocations for scientific departments, setting up new institutions for science education and research, creation of centres of excellence and facilities in emerging and frontline areas in academic and national institutes, and establishment of new and attractive fellowships among others," Tharoor said.
