Six mega universities approved

Nigeria’s National Economic Council (NEC) last Thursday approved the upgrade of six federal universities into mega tertiary institutions with capacity to enrol 150,000-200,000 students each, reports PM News.

Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state said the council’s decision was a sequel to the recommendations of the Technical Committee on the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities. He said the NEC endorsed the committee’s recommendation that the six mega universities be located in each geo-political zone.

Obi said the upgrade of the designated universities would be in the medium term and would assist in clearing backlogs of students seeking admission. Obi said the council also endorsed the recommendation of the committee that both the federal and state governments should prioritise funding by raising budgetary allocation to tertiary institutions.
