Protest over Ben-Gurion University bias claim

A petition has been circulating asking for the cancellation of the Council of Higher Education sub-committee’s decision not to allow students to register in Ben-Gurion University’s politics and government programme starting in the 2013-14 academic year, writes Danielle Ziri for The Jerusalem Post.

The council’s decision is pending approval by its plenum. Students enrolled for the academic year about to begin will continue their studies as planned.

“Israeli academic freedom is under severe attack,” states the petition, signed by faculty from universities and colleges around the country. Professor David Newman, dean of the faculty for human and social sciences at Ben-Gurion University in Beersheba, said last weekend that claims that the politics and government programme were left-wing oriented were “just not based on reality,” a Jerusalem Post columnist, said.
