Fund seeks to promote ‘demand-driven’ research
Incentives in the form of a N3 billion (US$18.5 million) grant may soon come the way of tertiary institutions with bias towards ‘demand-driven’ research, the Tertiary Education Trust indicated last week, write Karls Tsokar and Mohammed Abubakar for The Guardian Nigeria.The Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced in Abuja that his organisation had set aside N3 billion to fund research institutions in order to promote demand-driven research.
He said the organisation’s research fund would address issues of capacity building, improve quality teaching with provision for the training of students from undergraduate to doctoral level and raise the standards of tertiary education. He also said there was a dearth of PhD holders among teaching staff, which had negatively impacted on the quality of research conducted in Nigeria.
