Minister hints at ‘further developments’ around merger
Welsh Education Minister Leighton Andrews last week hinted there may be “further developments” regarding the creation of a new university in southeast Wales, writes Gareth Evans for Wales Online. As revealed in the Western Mail, senior management at the University of Glamorgan and University of Wales, Newport, are in talks to create a ‘beacon institution’ that would be similar to Cardiff University in size. But the proposed merger plan is not restricted to Glamorgan and Newport, with the universities open to further expansion in the future.
Cardiff Metropolitan University, earmarked by the Welsh government as a potential merger partner, is considered the ideal foil for the new institution. It is not currently in negotiation with any other university but is expected to provide an update on its position following a meeting of governors.
