MADAGASCAR: University lecturers' strike continues

The university lecturers' and researchers' union SECES maintained its strike action this month, keeping up demands for payment of research allowances and other remuneration.

Midi Madagasikara of Antananarivo reported that on 16 November the main gates of the Ankatso campus were locked, with students climbing in over the walls with ladders to try to find out news about their courses and grants, and departing 'under hedges'.

Midi Madagasikara reported on Monday that SECES members at the University of Toamasina had voted to continue suspension of all their teaching and research activities, meaning students were unable to take examinations.

The paper said there were fears of a wasted university year.
