MALAYSIA: Full autonomy for top universities by 2015
Malaysia's five research universities are expected to obtain full autonomy by 2015, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said on Tuesday, reports the official news agency Bernama. He said this was in line with the government's plan to grant autonomy in stages to public institutions of higher learning as tabled in the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP). This was also practised by the world's renowned universities as it encouraged academics to be more innovative and creative.
So far only Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been granted autonomy through the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (Apex).
