WALES: Minister launches stinging attack on universities
Education Minister Leighton Andrews has launched a stinging attack on Welsh universities, which he claims have a "very limited" impact on the nation's economy and reputation, writes Gareth Evans for the Western Mail.In his first public address on higher education since funding allocations were announced in March, Andrews said higher education institutions lacked leadership and were failing to lift the nation up the UK prosperity table.
"We are not having a high enough impact in terms of the quality and quantity of our research," he told delegates at Cardiff University. "For too many in Wales, higher education remains a distant and irrelevant activity, clouded in mystery."
