MALAYSIA: Pay and promotions for professors to improve
The Prime Minister's call to raise the salaries and expedite the promotions of top performers in the public sector has been well received by the Higher Education Ministry, with the salary scheme for professors to be revised, Richard Lim reports for The Star. Professors will be able to enjoy promotions up to the highest grade without holding administrative posts at public universities.Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the move would put an end to politicking at universities, as professors no longer needed to vie for top administrative posts. "They can focus solely on their individual expertise through research activities, and this will help Malaysia realise the New Economic Model," he said in a press release.
The Ministry hoped the government would not limit the salary scheme review to professors, as improving the salaries of academic staff as a whole would encourage the involvement of fresh graduates in academia.
