DR CONGO: New selection rules for students

New student enrolment procedures will take effect in the coming academic year to channel students into courses that are appropriate for their qualifications, rather than allowing them a totally free choice of studies, reported La Prospérité of Kinshasa.

Mashako Mamba, Minister for Higher Education, is introducing the new rules to find a solution to declining levels of education at universities and other higher education institutions, said the newspaper. There was general agreement among observers, it said, that rigorous selection was necessary during admission procedures.

New students with a maths or physics qualification from their secondary school would be allowed to enrol only in related courses, and those who had done well in biochemistry encouraged to follow studies in medicine or agronomy. Students strong in humanities would be guided towards disciplines such as law, international relations or psychology.
